ECU Remapping is a great way to improve your cars engine performance and stop you from wanting to trade it in for a newer version while there's still miles on the clock at your disposal, but what exactly is remapping and how does it improve my car we hear you ask, well let us explain!
What is ECU Remapping?
Firstly it's best to explain that all modern cars are built with an 'Engine Control Unit' (ECU) which is a computer built inside the engine which are set to strict EU regulations regardless of which country the vehicle finally ends up being driven. This then makes the cars engine 'capped' much less than its true capacity and making the engine work harder.
With specialist assistance a trained ECU Remap technician will connect to the car's computer to run diagnostics of the vehicle and safely remap the engine to de-regulate the capped parameters.
We have over 17000 engine details on our database which is growing all the time as newer cars are released and technology is updated. Each car is custom remapped which means that no two cars provide the same output and dependent on how the vehicle has been driven the remapping differs slightly, however a trained ECU Remap technician will never push the car beyond legal standards or push the engine to dangerous or damaging levels.
Taking a Ford Focus 2015 -2018 1.5T Eco Boost as an example, remapping the engine could give you as much as 40% more engine power and up to 60% more torque, giving you a much more enjoyable drive with fuel savings and less CO2 emissions. (Statistics provided by our partner Quantum®)
Is Diesel Tuning Different From ECU Remapping?
With a diesel engine the principle is the same for a petrol engine, however most diesel engines have a casing around the engine to protect it and this must be removed by trained professionals using specialist tools. Once we have gained access to the 'on board diagnostics' via the port beneath the car's dashboard, we then read straight from the processing chip held inside.
From the processing chip we then upload the original map to our remapping partners in Quantum® who will create specialist recommendations for each vehicle within safe parameters that maximise the car's performance and fuel economy. Each original map is safely stored on our cloud should the owner wish to reverse the procedure.
Once the remapping to a TDI engine has been carried out, the car is then placed on a rolling road to thoroughly test and modify where needed. The whole process which is sometimes referred to as 'flashing' or 'chip tuning' normally takes about an hour.
What Other Things Can Be Remapped?
Anything that has a modern engine including private aircraft, custom private boats, jetskis, remapped motorbikes and commercial heavy goods vehicles.
Our ECU Remapping team has worked on fleets of commercial HGV's, luxury cars, sports cars, motorcycles and even agricultural machinery including tractors and combine harvesters!
